Gluten free doughnuts have been one of the last things, to be de-glutenised in the free from cake market. I came across the frozen, sugared ones by Feel Free Foods as a judge at the Free From Food Awards this year, and baked ones for the first time at Ruby’s of London in Greenwich.

But then, when scrolling through Instagram for gluten free inspiration at the beginning of this year, I found THIS:

Man, I could not believe such a thing actually existed.

These pretty, supremely Instagram-able baked ring doughnuts are made by Borough 22 also in Greenwich, SE London. Ryan, the founder makes these free from doughnuts by hand in his Woolwich kitchen for personal delivery across the city. Egg free, dairy free, and soya free. Elisa tested and certified below 5ppm gluten free, plus accommodating other intolerances and allergies too, these are a celebration of free from baking.

But it’s not just what they are free from… Because actually, regardless of this, they actually taste fantastic. They stand up as a product in their own right. Light, fluffy dough, baked to a light brown colour are a sweet treat with just a cinnamon sugar dusting, or simple glaze. But in true foodie fashion, Ryan has created some classic flavour combinations for frostings, including raspberry and pistachio, salted caramel and nutella.

I met Ryan back in the Spring this year to discuss gluten free food in general and my events GF Gathering. After much discussion and tasting, I was proud to include a doughnut for each guest at my GF Beer Tasting Event – the perfect end to a night of booze and pub grub!

But you don’t have to wait for Ryan to arrive at your door to hand deliver your box of glorious gluten free doughnuts any longer. Just pop down to Selfridges Food Hall, as soon as you can, as for the time being Borough 22 will be featured in the bakery counter. Trained for cross contamination and answering all your free from questions, Ryan has made sure that the staff know their stuff, and apparently they can even be frozen without loss of quality!

Not only does Ryan make excellent doughnuts… But for me he represents what I love about being part of the free from food community. He’s a passionate, dedicated artisan who is determined, like many people out there, to bring better quality, more diversity and more gluten free food joy to people like me. The products are excellent, never compromise on quality, and Ryan is genuinely one of the most fun people to collaborate with!

I am very proud to see him feature in Selfridges, as its a destination store for food trends in the industry, and it won’t be long, I hope till we see more of Borough 22 across the capital and beyond.
